Research is now showing that birds DO have a sense a smell but the parenting instinct is so strong it doesn’t matter if the young ones smell like humans. To counteract the old tale of mothers rejecting their babies because of human scent (which is false), we used to say that birds didn’t have a sense of smell. Now we’ll need to say that it just doesn’t matter what the babies smell like–the parenting instinct is just very strong.
