Sweet Slumber

Artist Statement: These three sea otters were contentedly resting and not being disturbed by humans as they napped. Sea otters sleep/rest up to 11 hours a day. It is important they are not be disturbed because it causes them to waste precious energy, which they need to survive.

Artist Statement: We photographed this handsome bobcat on a late autumn afternoon. He was very aware of our presence and casually explored the surrounding area—even climbing up onto an old tree stump. These felines exude grace and confidence as they move through the brush—they are capable of disappearing in a flash.

Artist Statement: Nudibranchs have always fascinated me with their many different shapes, sizes, and colors. This was the very first nudibranch I found in the wild!

 

 

Flamingos in the Galapagos

Artist Statement: Flamingos are birds known for making great migrations from Africa to South and North America. This was taken at the Galápagos Islands In Ecuador, home to many species found nowhere else in the world. I was able to get close since we were on a bridge with my long lens to capture it being shy.

Artist Statement: Crab spiders come in many different colors to help them blend in with certain environments to hunt bees. I happened to stumble upon this one while I was photographing a field of poppies in Santa Cruz. To this day, I am still surprised that my eyes caught it.

Eye on the Dragonfly

Artist Statement: This picture was taken in the late afternoon in Sacramento, California. I heard a rustling in the bushes near me, and I went to examine the noise. I found this dragonfly fluttering around in the reeds, and as I had never seen a dragonfly like this one before— I decided to take its portrait! I captured some fairly good photos of it before snapping this shot as it sat peacefully on one of the long, sturdy reeds.
