Seasonal Summer Camp Counselor

The Position

The Summer Camp Counselor (SCC) is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Lindsay Wildlife Experience (LWE) summer day camps. This is a part-time seasonal position that runs from May 2024 to August 2024. 

The schedule of the Summer Camp Counselor is the following:

  • Camp program planning and preparation:
    • May 20th-21st, May 28th-31st, and June 3rd-7th
    • 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

 

  • Camp program delivery:
    • Half-Day Camps: June 10-14, June 17-21, July 15-19, July 22-26, and July 29-August 2
      • 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
      • Monday through Friday
    • Full-Day Camps: June 24-28, and July 8-12
      • 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
      • Monday through Friday

Primary Responsibilities

  • With the assistance of one additional SCC, lead and teach a group of up to 20 campers throughout both half-day and full-day summer camps. This includes set-up, activity management, camper supervision, and clean-up.
  • Lead the teen counselors in training who are assisting with camp management, ensuring they know how to assist with set-up for upcoming activities and are leading camp in a safe and fun environment. 
  • Developing, supervising, and participating in camp-wide programming activities with campers of different ages.
  • Participating in planning meetings and training workshops held prior to camp sessions, and working with the Public Program Manager to develop and prepare camp activities. 
  • Working cooperatively with other Camp Counsellors to ensure campers are safe, while maintaining adequate health and hygiene measures
  • Building relationships with all campers by showing compassion, empathy and understanding
  • Providing positive feedback for parents
  • Prepare the materials and activities of each day of camp, including arts, crafts, natural history specimens, and all other arrangements. This requires being able to work independently on tasks such as making copies, using a cutting board, using scissors to prepare crafts parts, and a general knowledge of office supplies and preparing activities. 
  • Oversee check-in and check-out for campers and teen counselors in training. 
  • Keep camp on schedule according to planned activities, snack times, breaks, and all other components of the daily camp routine.
  • Assist the Public Programs Manager as needed with camp organization.

Qualifications

  • Previous education or working experience in children’s education (formal or informal), natural sciences, or related discipline. 
  • College degree in related fields is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work safely and positively with children between the ages of four and ten; skilled at encouragement, instruction, and guidance for children.
  • Ability to display good judgment and exercise diplomacy at all times; courteous and respectful interactions with supervisors, co-workers, volunteers, and the public.
  • Strong, age-appropriate verbal communication skills and able to foster positive interpersonal relationships

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Medium strength demands include exerting 20-50 pounds occasionally, 10-25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly. Requires using vision and hearing, and talking.
  • Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, sitting, reaching, pushing/pulling, balancing, and twisting. Occasionally requires carrying, kneeling, foot controls, bending, and crouching. Rarely requires climbing.

NON-PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequently requires change of tasks, working closely with others as part of a team, and a noisy/distracting environment. Rarely handling emergency situations.

OVERALL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards.
  • Primarily outdoors in a city park, as well as a classroom-type setting indoors.

Hours, Benefits & Compensation

This is a part-time seasonal, non-exempt (hourly) position that pays $20 -$22 an hour.
