Western Black Kingsnake
Western Black Kingsnake
Lampropeltis nigrita
The Western Black Kingsnake is one of the very few non-native species that we have here at Lindsay Wildlife, with this kingsnake being found throughout the Sonoran desert in Mexico and the very bottom of Arizona. These snakes are notable for their stunning all black coloration. Also known as Mexican Black Kingsnakes, these stunning serpents have a lot of similarities to our native California Kingsnake. They are resistant to pit viper venom, allowing them to prey upon the various rattlesnakes that live in the Mexican desert.
Our Western Black Kingsnake, Onyx, came to us in the summer of 2024, after being found underneath someone’s porch! Given how far we are from their native range, the most likely explanation is that he was a pet who was dumped. Since he is non native, we were unable to release him and he is now an Animal Ambassador! Onyx is a young kingsnake, likely less than 2 years old, and he has the energy to prove it. He is often seen exploring his enclosure, and when out for exercise and programming, is the wiggliest snake we work with! You can see Onyx in his enclosure on the Exhibit Floor, as well as during daily programs
