September 2019 Conservation Icons: Dr. Jamie Peyton, UC Davis
Fish skin used to HEAL wildlife wounds? Come learn all about the groundbreaking developments in veterinary medicine with Dr. Jamie Peyton, chief of Integrative Medicine Service at the UC Davis Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Peyton is the kick-off speaker at Lindsay Wildlife Experience’s 3rd annual Conservation Icons Speaker Series 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7.
In partnership with Lindsay Wildlife, Peyton began using tilapia skin as a biological Band-Aid on the wounds of injured raptors in 2018. The procedure has been a remarkable success, and helped speed up the healing process so that Lindsay’s wildlife patients can return more quickly to the wild. Peyton began this groundbreaking work by using fish skin on wildlife that had suffered from burns in California wildfires. In 2019, UC Davis named Peyton as Innovator of the Year for her successful and groundbreaking use of sterilized tilapia skin to treat animals with burns. Come hear about her fascinating research!
Dr. Peyton is one of eight speakers in our 2019-2020 Conservation Icons speaker series. The series aims to educate, entertain, inspire change and foster respect for the planet we share.
