Mount Diablo and surrounding parklands provide critical habitat and recreational opportunities for our East Bay communities. Yet behind this scenic backdrop, the far travelled and exotic Franciscan pillow basalts, ribbon cherts, and blueschist blocks record fascinating plate tectonic stories. Discover a new way of looking at and understanding our special Mount Diablo.

John Karachewski Ph.D. is a geologist for the California-EPA in Berkeley. John has conducted geology and environmental projects throughout the western United States from Colorado to Alaska to Midway Island and throughout California. John also teaches at Diablo Valley College and Emeritus College as well as leads field trips for the Point Reyes National Seashore Association and Oakland Museum of California.
